Add PDF Page Number
Add PDF page numbers to reports, assignments and manuals without uploading the document through this tool. Choose a header or footer, set the first number, and preview your layout. Use Roman numerals for front matter and a separate Arabic sequence for the main text. Adjust color, opacity and margins, then save a numbered copy.
Get Your Result in 4 Simple Steps
Get a clean, usable result in just a few clicks — fast, easy, and completely free.
Choose your PDF
Drop one PDF into the box or click to browse. The tool accepts files up to 50 MB and 500 pages. Password-protected documents need an unlocked copy first.
Set the pages and sequence
Choose From and To using physical page positions. To leave a cover unnumbered, start From at 2 and Start at 1. Open Advanced for separate ranges or skipped pages. Ranges cannot overlap; skipped pages still count in the sequence.
Style and preview the numbers
Choose Header or Footer, then Left, Center or Right. Facing pages mirrors side placement. Select a font, size, color and opacity, or print in both header and footer.
Save and inspect the copy
Click Save PDF, then Download. Open the saved copy and inspect the first numbered page, range transitions and rotated pages. Changing settings clears the previous download, so save again after adjustments.
Everything You Need in One Tool
Built to be fast, clean, and easy to maintain — with no messy lines or hard-to-spot errors.
Roman and Arabic ranges
Number introductory pages i, ii, iii, then start the main section at 1 using another range. Each range has its own first number and skip list; invalid or overlapping ranges are reported before export.
Headers, footers and facing pages
Place numbers in six header/footer positions or both rows at once. Facing-page mode alternates left and right alignment. Its cover setting changes facing-page parity; it does not remove the stamp from page one. Use From or Skip to omit a page.
Custom text, color and opacity
Use a plain number, Page 1, or Page 1 of 10. Custom templates accept {page}, {total} and {rangeTotal}. Choose Helvetica, Times or Courier with bold, italic or underline, then adjust number color and opacity from 10 to 100 percent.
Local processing with preview
PDF bytes are processed in your browser. Software libraries load from external CDNs, but this numbering workflow does not send your document to a conversion server.
Who Is This Tool For?
Whether you're working on a personal project or a professional one, this tool fits right in.
-
Reports with a separate cover
Leave the cover unnumbered and start the body at page 1. -
Theses with front matter
Use Roman numerals for acknowledgments and contents, followed by an Arabic range for chapters. -
Merged documents
Merge and organize your PDFs first, then apply a consistent sequence. Old printed page numbers remain visible unless removed separately. -
Double-sided manuals
Use facing pages for alternating side positions.
Small Changes. Big Difference.
A little polish goes a long way — it saves time, reduces mistakes, and makes your work look more professional.
Reserve room for the stamp
Numbering adds text over the existing page; it does not create a new blank margin. Reduce the font or change position if it overlaps content.
Understand skipped positions
For a range starting at 1, skipping physical page 2 leaves labels 1, blank, 3. Use separate ranges when you need the next visible label to be 2.
Check rotated and cropped pages
Placement accounts for page rotation and the crop box. Review unusual page sizes and orientations in the downloaded copy before printing a long document.
Keep a source copy
Editing a signed PDF invalidates its digital signature. Check forms, links and bookmarks after saving; not every PDF construct is guaranteed to survive rewriting unchanged.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to the most common questions about this tool.
Set From to 2 and Start to 1. The first physical page remains unstamped and the second receives 1. The facing-page cover checkbox only adjusts side-placement parity; it is not an exclusion control.
Yes. In Advanced, create a Roman range for the front matter and a non-overlapping Arabic range for the rest. Set each starting value separately. Roman numbering must begin at 1 or higher.
{page} is the formatted sequence number, {total} is the document page count, and {rangeTotal} counts physical pages in that range, including skipped pages.
Yes. Enter a skip list such as 3,5-7 within Advanced. Those pages remain in the PDF without a new stamp. They still count toward the numbering sequence; skipping does not close the numbering gap.
No. It adds new text and does not detect or erase old numbers. Choose another position or edit the source document first if existing numbering would clash with your new sequence.
Process one PDF at a time, up to 50 MB and 500 pages. Large scans and complex documents may run slowly or exceed device memory.
The built-in standard fonts do not provide full Unicode support. Unsupported characters produce an export error. Use supported Latin text; this version does not embed a custom Unicode font.
Unlock an authorized copy first using Unlock PDF, then load that copy here. The numbering tool does not ask for a password or bypass encryption.
This workflow reads, numbers and saves your PDF locally in the browser. Library downloads require internet access.
No. New visible page labels do not rewrite contents references, bookmarks or PDF page-label metadata. Check those separately after numbering, especially if your visible sequence starts after a cover or switches between Roman and Arabic numbers.
